Officers from the Darien Police Department responded to a Middlesex Road home shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, where there was a reported one-car crash involving a vehicle that struck a local home.

Upon arrival, officers said that they saw a vehicle that appeared to have been driven through the bushes on the property, ultimately coming to a rest after striking the residence. The vehicle was unoccupied when officers arrived.

Police said that the homeowner reported hearing the crash and looking out the window, where she saw the vehicle resining against the home. She stated that she could hear the driver attempting to unsuccessfully start the vehicle. Officers failed to locate the driver - later identified as Norwalk resident Santiago Giraldo - during a check in the area.

Shortly before 4:30 a.m. that night, investigators received a call from a neighbor of the home that was struck, reporting that someone was knocking on his front door, asking for help.

According to police, officers responded to the home and spoke with Giraldo, who admitted to being the driver of the car. He stated that he was unfamiliar with the area and lost control while fiddling with his GPS. He also admitted to consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

Giraldo passed multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests at the scene, though he was taken into custody and charged with evading responsibility and cited for a stop sign violation. After being processed, Giraldo was released on a $1,000 bond and issued a ticket to appear in court at a later date.
